Ansel Elgort has won the role of Tony in Steven Spielberg’s upcoming West Side Story remake.
The news is surprising and unsurprising in equal measure – on the one hand many may have expected the film to cast a Broadway veteran in the role, but on the other it makes sense for Spielberg to choose a name and a face that appeals to film audiences.
The movie is a remake of the 1957 musical film, adapted from the stage show based on Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. It was originally written by Arthur Laurents and Stephen Sondheim and directed by Jerome Robbins, with music from Leonard Bernstein.
Earlier this week it was reported that Carousel choreographer Justin Peck would be working on West Side Story.
Filming is set to begin next summer.
